Lynard Skynard鈥檚 Free Bird represents an era where individual freedom was being highly valued. This is highly tied in with social structure which is the idea that people interact in roles that are in some way systematically related to one another. The role of people is and was then, to be free and not have anything to restrain you from achieving your aspirations. Freedom is a value that society highly cherished in this era and it鈥檚 reflected in the lyrics of this song. It is a social function to be able to attain these desires with nothing to hold one back which is a sociological concept reflected strongly in this song. At the same time, this song also reflects an inability to change one鈥檚 ideals and values.
The song tells us that society had a strong desire to break free from any restraints in our life whether it was the authority of big government or big business or in the case of this song based on a woman holding him back from being truly free in his life. Social progressivism was a very strong ideal in the 1970s where basic social norms should be revised as new scientific knowledge becomes available; this essentially is the idea that with times changing, the direction of our lives should change along with it rather then remaining stagnant. Revolutions and change were deemed as the direction society should aim for particularly at this moment in time. The failed policies of the Vietnam War were becoming very evident in this time which ultimately popularized the progressive movement. In this song, it鈥檚 implied that he can鈥檛 change his desire and must aim for his belief in being free. He implies that if he stays with her, he wouldn鈥檛 be able to progressively pursue his desire for fresh, new experiences with freedom in mind.
This song promotes conformity in the sense that everyone strives for freedom and change in their lives at one time or another and the inability to change your values that you cherish in order to progressively move forward would be hindered by outside sources like in this case of this song, he feels this woman would hold him back from exploring new avenues of life. He knows he can鈥檛 change his inner desire to move on despite the fact that he still ponders on the thought if she would still remember him. Sociologically speaking, this portrays the urge to move towards the kind of social network that isn鈥檛 held back by anything or anyone, but rather the type of social network that values one鈥檚 desire to be free and live their lives as individuals rather then live their lives under someone who holds them back from their potential to explore the world and gain new experiences.|||I think you do talk about freedom way to much. Freedom is a vague term
%26quot;to be free and not have anything to restrain you from achieving your aspirations%26quot; is still vague. Anything could cover a lot of ground. I am restrained from killing by the police. People are restrained from talking in theaters because they will get nasty looks. Do these make you not free? Also freedom good is kind of a boring paper and an old idea try something new. Also when you say freedom is functional you need to give pacific preferably ones that relate to the song or at least the time period. Also consider quoting lyrics to support your point. Also focus more on the freedom being disused by the song. The song seems to praise the independent drifter (I don%26#039;t know if drifter is quit the right word it has a negative condition). Discus the freedom held by this type of person compared to the person who settles down and gets married. A lot of southern rock bands talked about the value of the drifter life (such as Proud Mary by CCR). I think it is important you get more specific and more concrete.
Good luck|||It would be better if you could put some quotes from the song. That way the reader would know what line or verse you are referring to. It is a bit long and repetitive. If you use quotes and make references to them it will pick up. Other than that, I can tell you are really trying and I applaud the effort.
PS you only mention Free Bird once. You can expound a bit on the title. Also the exact year it came out etc. Why do people still request this song. Why does it resonate so strongly?
